Understanding the physical demands of soccer requires accurate and objective quantification of the players’ match activities. It is well established that soccer is characterized by low- (e.g., standing and walking) and high-intensity (e.g., running and sprinting) activities. Along with the sport-specific activities (e.g., tackles, turns, headers, dribbles), locomotor activities constitute the total physical load a player experiences during a match.

Important factor concerning player load is movements with accelerations and decelerations. Movements with accelerations are more energetically demanding than constant velocity running. Even at a low running speed, a high metabolic load is imposed on a soccer player when acceleration is elevated. Decelerations are just as common as accelerations in soccer and will therefore also contribute significantly to the players’ load during match play.

Today we present you a circuit to train your players, precisely on the analysis of the numerous movements they make in the match, the exercise involves a few meters of accelerations, deceleration, braking standing on one leg for a few seconds, a few meters of walking and then the acceleration restart, all carried out in a rectangle that shows the image below.

EXAMPLE n°1

Field preparation

rectangle grid 20 x 15 meters – 6 white cones – 4 red cones – two starting positions.

The start takes place from the two red cones ( see the picture above), Player’s begines in acceleration of a few meters (five mt), phase of deceleration and stop into the white cones with one leg up for 2 seconds, then walk fast towards the next red cone, repeat acceleration until the next white cone, 2 seconds stop, and then walking fast towards the next red cone, two rounds and one minute recovery.

A thorough warm up should be performed before each practice session. Refer to the “Warm Up”
section of the website for a variety of fun warm up activities for your team. Use a combination of
exercises “with” and “without” the ball. Relate the warm up to the skill of the day. Be creative,
energetic, and make the warm-up a fun start to the practice session.

Todays exercise for your kids (under 11) is Motor skills, too increased there abilities with and without the ball.

Exercise Objectives:
This practice is designed to develop motor skills while running with the ball in hands.

Field Preparation
2 Players, Area 15 x 15 yards, Cones , 2 Balls

Coaching Pointers:

Two players are positioned each side of the circiut with the ball in hand, they leaved at the same time and perform the routes. (open wide and closed foot working between colored cones, and slalom between cones). The first to arrive at the end will leave his ball inside one of the two colored circles, waiting for his team mate, doing the same think. Afterwards, they will, interchange route and continue the new path.

ORGANISATION:

Set up and area 50 x 50 meter using 1 full size soccer goal, balls are positioned near the first station: there is 3 station with 3 players.

INSTRUCTIONS:

Looking at the diagram, there is 3 players: the drill starts always with the blu player, that kick’s the ball to the yellow player and runs to do a overlapping around him. The yellow player does the same thing; a one touch pass to the violet player in the third station and he run’s toward him (overlap). The violet player pass the ball to the blu player and he runs toward’s him, the final one touch passing from the blu player towards the yellow player on the wing, which, meeting the ball, effect a cross in the box for the 2 team mates, and finish.

KEY COACHING PIONTS:

  • correct technique passing
  • correct timing runs

VARIATIONS:

This combination drill can be placed even on the middle of the pitch.

INSTRUCTIONS:

The aim of the game is to have always the possession of the ball inside the area, but the basic obejective of the two teams is to develop tactics doing “one – two wall passing and keeping the possession.

KEY COACHING POINTS;

  • one point for every “one – two wall pass”
  • one point after six  consecutive pass
  • overload avantage
  • technical  skills
  • decision passing

VARIATION:

Possession drill

Having 4 teams in a full size pitch, playing a 4 vs 4 possession drill, after 10 minutes play the same obiective with a 8 vs 8.

Tips

Make sure the techniques used are efficient and realistic.

The attack players must use both feet in the dribbling step to go out of the square.

Objective

Description

7 attackers and 3 defenders.

The attackers tries to arrive to the opposite line, while the defenders must try to take away the ball.

The attackers are allowed to move forward and sideways, but not backwards.

The defenders can attacked only one attackers at a time.
